What is psychological assessment?
gathering data about children and families to reach conclusions about their functioning and future wellbeing, continues through treatment, and goes beyond test admin and diagnosis.
Why do we do psychological assessments?
to screen for possible problems, diagnose disorders, identify problems and plan intervention, monitor treatment.
What is a multi-informant and multi-method assessment?
gathering data in a number of different ways to get a complete picture of child’s functioning.
Why use multi-informant and multi-method assessment?
to address informant discrepancies and because child behavior can vary across settings and type of evaluation.

purposeful conversation with parent, child, and sometimes others who know the child’s functioning. Usually a diagnostic interview,

appearance and actions, emotions, & cognitions.
What is the main structure of a clinical interview?
identify the presenting problem (primary reason for seeking treatment), gather data on psychosocial history and current functioning.
What makes a good interviewer/clinician?
Stay alert, listen, concentrate, be patient, open-minded/accepting, convey understanding, use open-ended Qs, use understandable/non-offensive language, limit personal disclosure, allow reflective silence.
What are the types of clinical interviews?
Structured and semi-structured.
What is a structured clinical interview?
Systematic review of all major psychiatric diagnoses to
determine if child meets criteria.
What is a semi-structured clinical interview?
Get a general idea of the problem and ask targeted questions that covered a broad range of psychopathology.
What is a mental status examination?
brief assessment of child’s current
behavior, emotion, and cognition.
What is behavior?
appearance, posture, eye contact, movement, quality of interactions, attitude.
What is a behavioral assessment?
observation methods and functional analysis of behavior.
What is functional analysis of behavior?
the abcs - What antecedent (A) triggers the behavior (B)? What consequence (C) does it produce?
