What is a CBT model?
Emphasizes psychological level of analysis, but also considers biological and sociocultural levels.
What is pseudoscience?
consists of statements, beliefs, and practices people claim are evidence-based but are incompatible with principles of scientific thinking.
Exaggerated & often contradictory claims that cannot be disproven.
What is falsifiability?
the capacity for an idea to be proven wrong.
the most important principle of scientific thinking.
If a hypothesis cannot be falsified, it cannot be disproven or rejected based on evidence.
What is critical thinking?
Science doesn’t accept information at face value or based on personal beliefs & opinions.
What is parsimony?
provide the simplest explanation possible.
What is precision?
scientists are careful in the way they collect data &
interpretations (conclusions that they draw from
observations).
What is reproducibility?
study results must be replicated before accepted. If real, another researcher should obtain similar methods. Direct replication same exact procedure as original study.
What is the replication crisis?
we are failing to replicate many published
studies.
What is a psychological theory?
an integrated set of ideas that explain and predict broad aspects of human behavior or development.
What is a hypothesis?
a specific, falsifiable prediction about relationship between two or more variables.
What is empirical data?
information gathered through our senses.
What are ethics?
Standards of behavior acceptable for given profession.
What are ethical issues?
mental health research with children and families.
What are beneficences?
Benefit those you work with. Keep welfare of the client or
research participant in mind.
What is nonmalafience?
Avoid harm.
