Test 1 Vocab Flashcards
Hypothesis
Tentative interpretation or explanation of the observations
Observation
Measurement of some aspect of nature
Experiments
Highly controlled observations
Theory
One or More well established hypotheses may form the basis for a scientific theory
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass
Atoms
Submicroscopic particles that are the fundamental building blocks of matter
Molecules
Two or more atoms joined to one another in specific geometric arrangements
Crystalline
Atoms or molecules arranged in geometric patters with long-range, repeating order.
Amorphous
Atoms or molecules don’t have long range repeating order
Pure substance
One type of atom or molecule
Mixture
Two or more different types of atoms or molecules combined in variable proportions
Element
Substance that can’t be broken down into simpler substances
Heterogeneous mixture vs. homogeneous mixture
Hetero: such as crunchy peanut butter, composition varies from one region to another
Homo: such as sweetened tea, composition is the same throughout
Physical property
One that a substance displays without changing it’s composition
Chemical property
One that a substance displays only through changing it’s composition
