ACIDS Flashcards
What does (aq) tell you?
Tells you it is an acid
An acid must be…
A compound with hydrogen as its first element and must be dissolved in water.
A single poly-atomic ion does not qualify as an acid. Must be a COMPOUND.
What is a binary acid?
2 elements, one has to be hydrogen.
How do you write out a binary acid?
Hydro______ic acid.
Ex.) HCl (aq) —> hydrochloric acid
Without the (aq), it would just be hydrogen chloride
What does an oxyacid always have?
Must have an oxygen and hydrogen atom
- always have a poly atomic ion in them
- must know name of poly atomic ion
If the poly atomic ion in a oxyacid ends in “-ate,” then it is an…
-ic acid
Oxyacids only
If the poly atomic ion in an oxyacid ends in “-ite,” then it is an…
-ous acid
When an acid decomposes, what does it decompose into?
A water molecule (H2O) and whatever is left after you take out the water molecule
