Different Types Of Equations (molecular, Ionic, Net Ionic) Flashcards
Ionic equations
Shows the charges of all the elements on the left side (make sure they are balanced.) and the ions on the right side. If a PRODUCT was a solid in the molecular equation, leave it as a solid in the ionic equation.
Molecular equations
This is how you write the problem as it is given to you on the solubility rules sheet. Must label if aqueous or solid.
- If a reactant is a solid, no reaction.
- if the products are both aqueous, no reaction.
Of there is a solid in the product side of an equation, what must you write?
A net ionic equation for the elements in that solid compound. IONS MUST BE BALANCED LIKE IN THE IONIC AND MOLECULAR EQUATION
What is a solid called on the product side of the molecular equation?
A precipitate.
If there are elements, not compounds, on each side of the ionic equation, what are those called?
Spectator ions, they do not have to be balanced. But remember, these are IONS, so denote the charge in all “ionic” equations!
Molecular equation vs. ionic equation vs. net ionic
- Shows compounds
- Shows elements and any compounds that are solids stay as solids. Elements on both sides of equation are called ‘spectator ions’
- For the solids on the product side of a ionic equation.
