Q

What is a Lewis Structure?

A

The element symbol which shows the valence electrons (highest energy level)

If an ion is positive than the Lewis symbol is the same as writing the ion.

If an ion is negative, you must put brackets around it and the charge of the negative ion outside of the brackets.

Q

1 mole is how many particles?

What can a particle be?

How many atoms in one molecule of nitrogen gas? (N )
2

How many molecules in one mole of nitrogen gas?

A
  1. 6.022x10^23 particles
  2. Atoms, ions, molecules, formula units
  3. 2 atoms of nitrogen in one molecule Nitrogen gas
  4. (6.022 x 10^23) x 2

Q

How can you tell the amount of valence electrons?

A

By looking at the group number of the element. For example, a chlorine atom (no charge) has 7 valence electrons. A chloride ion (negatively charged) has an extra electron and therefor has 8 valence electrons

What is orbital notation?

A

When you put the arrows up and down in the energy levels (1-7) and the sub levels (s-1, p-3, d-5, f-7) (think “s,pdf)

Q

Molecular formula (which is different from a molecular equation btw)

A

Molecule/molar mass (in grams)
———————————– = An even number
Empirical formula (in grams)

Take that even number and multiply original formula by it

Q

(Aq) means

A

Aqueous, dipped in water, you use this for acids and for soluble elements. If it is a solid (s) it means not soluble in water and you must write a NET IONIC EQUATION FOR THESE
