Term 4 Physics - Energy Flashcards
Potential energy
A stored form of energy
Energy that is stored
Energy conservation
When one form of energy is transformed into other forms of energy
Temperature
A measure of how fast particles that make up substances are moving
Chemical Energy
Chemical is stored in the bonds between atoms in molecules and compounds
Example of chemical potential energy is food we eat, petrol to make car move
Electrical Energy
Electrical energy is generated by the movement of electrons
Gravitational
Large objects such as earth and the sun create gravity and gravitational energy
This energy is changed from gravitational to kinetic energy when objects start to fall back to ground
Heat energy
Heat energy is also called thermal energy. It involves atoms and compounds and molecules moving and vibrating
Light
Light is a type of radiant energy. Light is made up of from tiny particles called photons
Kinetic
Anything that is moving has this type of energy
Nuclear
Huge amounts of nuclear energy can be generated by splitting atoms
Elastic
This energy is stored in stretchy or springy objects such as rubber bands and springs
Sound
The vibration of particles, energy is passed from one particle to the next
Law of energy conservation
This law states that no energy can be destroyed only changed from one state to another
What is the main unit of measurement
Joules
What is the formula for calculating kinetic energy
Ek= 1/2 x m x V2
