Term 4 Earth Science Flashcards
Abundance
If there is a lot of something, it is described as being abundant
Acid rain
Rain that contains dissolved acidic gases such nitrogen oxides and Sulfur dioxide
Atmosphere
The layers of gases that surround the earth. The important gases in the atom sphere are nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide
Biological weathering
The breaking down of rocks because of the actions of living organisms, such as trees and burrowing animals
Chemical weathering
The erosion of rocks by the chemicals that react with minerals
Core
The innermost of the earth
The outer layer of the earth on top the mantle
Crust
Erosion
The wearing of rock, soil or any solid minerals
Extrusive
Extrusive rock is formed from lava and magma that cools quickly at the surface
Grain
A small particle in a rock
Igneous
Rocks that formed under very hot conditions within the earth e.g basalt and obsidian
Intrusive
Intrusive rock is formed when hot molten magma is forced it small crack between layers of other types rocks
Lava
Molten rock that is released from the earth’s core in a volcano
Magma
Molten rock found within the earth
Mantle
A zone of hot rock In the interior of the earth located between the outer crust and the molten core.
Metamorphic rock
A type of rock formed under intense heat and pressure
Permeable
Something that allows water to pass through it
Porous
Lots of void space
Sedimentary rock
Rocks that are formed through the deposition of sediments
Rock cycle
All the processes that are included in creating a rock
Hardness
Restinace of the rock
Colour of the mineral
Colour
Streak
The colour of the powdered mineral
Lustre
The extent to which the surface of the mineral reflects the light
Density
The amount of matter contained in a specific volume
Cleavage
The way the mineral splits apart
The crystal shape
Habit
