Teratogens Flashcards
It has the greatest effect on cells undergoing what kind of development? (cells are dividing the most) ex.brain
Rapid development
A substance that negatively affects normal fetal growth and development
Teratogen
Organogenesis occurs when?
Prior to 8 weeks (2-8 weeks)
What percentage of medications are linked to birth defects?
10%
What percentage of women use at least one medication?
60%
This medication presents as a risk for spontaneous abortion and congenital anomalies
Accutane
This medication presents as odotoxic (ears)
Mycins (gentamycin)
This medication increases risks of neural tube defects, cleft palate, IVGR (intrauterine growth restriction), and cognitive abnormalities
Anticonvulsants - valproic acid and carbamezapine
This medication can prolong labor or inhibit labor; inhibits prostaglandin synthesis which can cause premature ductus arteriosis constriction (valve that allows fetal circulation). Do not use late in pregnancy and after 28 weeks do not use AT ALL.
Salycilates (NSAIDs)
This medication presents as a risk for yellow teeth and depresses skeleton growth of the fetus
Tetracycline (doxycycline)
This medication has an increased risk of birth defects, IUGR, fetal death (3x more like to have birth defects)
ACE inhibitors
This medication has a risk for spontaneous abortion, fetal demise, and newborn hemorrhage, CNS defects because it crosses the placenta barrier.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
All of these are contraindicated. Recommended to use inactivated injections.
Love virus vaccines
The FDA classification system has how many categories?
5 (ABCDX)
Adequate well controlled studies have failed to show fetal risk
Category A
