Tenet Cittamatra (conciousness/what are afflictions, non virtues, contaminated karmas/3sufferings/ASR!/putative self/composite space) Flashcards

1
Q

What is projecting and completing karma in general

A

Projecting Karma (projects only one time (birth) in a life)

Completing Karma (operates millions of times within a single day, destructed mind, feeling sad, etc.).

Q

What do the lower schools and the Cittamatrens say about not having root of virtue?

What do Prasangika and Madhyamaka say?

A

Cittamatra and lower schools say that some beings have no root of virtue, they are always negative. The root of virtue is savered ( in some people).
Prasangika and Madhyamaka do not accept this. No matter how bad a person is the root of virtues will never be severed!

Q

Distinction in between non virtues and afflictions:

A

Affliction: a mental factor, the presence of which disturbs our mind!
(Samsara: Desire realm, form realm, formless realm: in all 3 realms the afflictions exist. The afflictions which exist in the higher realms they are not non virtues!
==» Afflictions mark the individual as a samsaric being!!!)

Non virtues means something which gives rise to suffering of suffering, which doesn’t exist in the higher realms, therefore the afflictions in the higher realm are not non virtues.
Not all afflictions are non virtues.

Q

Where do the 3 types of suffering exist and what are it’s causes?

A
  1. Suffering of suffering, which exists only in desire realm, is a result of non-virtuous karmas and mental afflictions.
  2. Suffering of change, which exists in desire and the first 3 levels of form realm (first three concentrations), is a result of contaminated virtues (neutral feeling).
  3. Pervasive Conditioned Suffering, which exists in all three realms, is the result of having generated and being under the influence of contaminated karmas and afflictions.

The root cause of being under the influence of contaminated karmas and afflictions, is self-
grasping ignorance.

Q

What are contaminated karmas, non-virtues karmas and contaminated virtues?

A

Contaminated karmas = actions of body, speech, and mind that are influenced by afflictions.

non-virtuous karmas = actions of body, speech, and mind that are
influenced by afflictions and give rise to suffering as a result.

contaminated virtues = actions of body, speech, and mind (karmas) that are influenced by afflictions and give rise to happiness (within
samsara) as a result.

Q

In the desire realm which afflictions are non virtues?

A

1.View of perishable collection = SGI
2.View of the extreme
3.The ignorance which acompanies the 2 above views.
==> all other afflictions which exist in the desire realm are non virtues and afflictions

Q

The afflictions of the form and formless realm, are they virtues , non virtues, or both?

A

All afflictions of form and formless realm should necessarily be NOT non virtues, because the afflictions in these 2 realms give never rise to suffering of suffering! (suffering of suffering does not exist in the form and formless realms)

Q

Is Alaya virtues, non virtues, both, or neutral? (Cittamatra)

A

Alaya is also NOT non virtues because it exists also in the higher realms!!!! It does exist in all 3 realms.

((All afflictions of form and formless realm should necessarily be NOT non virtues, because the afflictions in these 2 realms give never rise to suffering of suffering))

Q

Definition of afflicitive conciousness (Cittamatra)

A

a mind which always looks at the Alaya. On that basis the sense of self comes into being. It misconceives the sense of the autonomous substantial self with respect to the putative self.
That putative self is seen as substantial self and becomes therefore afflictive. ==» afflictied conciousness.

Q

In Cittamatra non composite space is permanent or impermanent?

A

Non composite space is empty of being permanent!

Non composite space is empty of being impermanent!

Impermanent is rejected only on the non composite space, it doesn’t mean that impermanence doesn’t exist. It does exist, it exists on all the composite phenomena, like table, house, person, etc.

Q

Cittamatra view on the autonomous substantial reality

A

Whatever is mind should necessarily be ASR (accepted by all Buddhist schools, apart from Prasangika, they say nothing exists as ASR)

Although autonomous substantial reality is rejected on the self in general, (because they accept the emptiness of autonomous substantial reality of the putative self), it doesn’t mean that autonomous substantial reality doesn’t exist at all, it does exist! (Cittamatra)

ASR is an entity which a mind identifies independently of identifying something else/another object.
==>
For example when we are looking at a pen, we see the pen with our eye conciousness directly. But we see only the thin outer surface of the pen. So we do not see the pen, but seeing the outer surface makes us identifying it as a pen. Really we do not see it though. So the pen is not ASR, because it is an entity which our mind identifies dependently on identifying something else which is not a pen, but only the pens surface.

Table is empty of autonomous substantial Reality (ASR)
Putative self is empty of ASR

Q

What is a putative self?

A

When we do not go deep into the substance (staying on the level of conventions of the ordinary beings), than it is a SELF ON THE LEVEL OF IMPUTATION! (as ordinary
people). All schools accept it.
