Temperomandibular Joint Flashcards
What type of joint is the TMJ?
Synovial hinge-type joint
What nerve innervates the TMJ?
Auricotemporal nerve - branch of CNVc
What is the anatomy of the TMJ?
Articular surfaces lined with fibrocartilage
Seperated by fibrocartilaginous disc
Stabilised by joint capsule and ligaments
How does the jaw open?
Initial opening = hinge action by inferior half of the joint cavity
How do you open the jaw widely?
Wider opening = condyle glides over articular tubercle - movement occurs in superior half of joint
How does the jaw retract/protract?
Gliding movements at superior joint capsule
What muscles are involved in elevation of the mandible?
Masseter
Temporalis
Medial pterygoid
What muscles are involved in protrusion of the mandible
Lateral pterygoid
Medial pterygoid
What muscles are involved in retraction of the mandible?
Posterior fibres of temporalis
What can cause TMJ dislocation?
Facial trauma
Yawning
What happens in TMJ dislocation?
Jaw locks in open position due to anterior dislocation of condyle over anterior tubercle
Muscles contract to keep joint locked in anterior displacement
