Pharynx Flashcards
What are the 3 parts of the pharynx?
Nasopharynx
Oropharynx
Laryngopharynx
What are the boundaries of the nasopharynx?
Base of skull -> soft palate
Posterior = C1,2
Anterior = nasal cavity
What are the contents of the nasopharynx?
Pharyngeal tonsil
What provides sensory innervation to the nasopharynx?
CN Vb
What are the boundaries of the oropharynx?
Soft palate -> epiglottis
Posterior = C2,3
Anterior = oral cavity
What are the contents of the oropharynx?
Palatine tonsils
What provides sensory innervation to the oropharynx?
CN IX
What are the boundaries of the laryngopharynx?
Epiglottis -> cricoid cartilage + oesophagus
Posterior = C4,5,6
Anterior = larynx
What are the contents of the laryngopharynx?
Piriform fossa
What provides sensory innervation to the laryngopharynx?
CN X
What types of muscles are in the pharynx?
Longitudinal
Circular
What is the role of the longitudinal muscles?
Elevate pharynx and larynx during swallowing
What are the 3 longitudinal muscles?
Stylopharyngeus
Palatopharyngeus
Salpingopharyngeus
What are the attachments of stylopharyngeus?
Styloid process -> posterior border of thyroid cartilage
What is the innervation of stylopharyngeus?
CN IX - glossopharyngeal
What are the attachments of palatopharyngeus?
Hard palate -> posterior border of thyroid cartilage
What is the innervation of palatopharyngeus?
CN X - vagus
What are the attachments of salpingopharyngeus?
Cartilaginous part of ET -> merges with palatopharyngeus
What is the innervation of salpingopharyngeus?
CN X - vagus
What are the 3 circular muscles?
Superior pharyngeal constrictor
Middle pharyngeal constrictor
Inferior pharyngeal constrictor
What is the role of the circular muscles?
Constrict walls of the pharynx when swallowing
What are the 2 parts of the inferior pharyngeal constrictor?
Thyropharyngeal
Cricopharyngeal
What is the innervation of the circular muscles?
CN X - vagus
What is a pharyngeal pouch?
A posteromedial outpouching of the pharynx
What causes a pharyngeal pouch?
Failure of the upper oesophageal sphincter to relax
Abnormal timing of swallowing = higher pressure in the laryngopharynx
Weakness in the inferior constrictor muscle produces outpouching
What are the symptoms of a pharyngeal pouch?
Bad breath
Regurgitation of food
Difficulty swallowing
