Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
1
Q
What is a destructive plate margin?
A
- Two plates moving towards each other
- Where oceanic plate meets a continental plate the denser oceanic plate is subducted into the mantle and destroyed
- Where two continental plates meet the plates collide and the ground is folded and forced upwards
2
Q
What landforms do destructive plate margins create?
A
- Volcanos
- Ocean Trenches
3
Q
What happens when two continental plates meet?
A
- Mountain ranges are created
4
Q
What is a constructive plate margin?
A
- Two plates are moving away from each other
- Magma rises from the mantle to fill the gap which cools and creates new land
5
Q
What is a conservative plate margin?
A
- Conservative plates are moving sideways past each other or are moving in the same direction at different speeds
- The crust isn’t created or destroyed
6
Q
What are the three types of plate margin?
A
- Destructive
- Constructive
- Conservative
7
Q
What is continental crust?
A
- It is thick (30-50km) but not very dense
8
Q
What is oceanic crust?
A
- Is thin (5-10km) and very dense
9
Q
What do plates float on and how do they move?
A
- They float on the mantle
- They move because of convection currents in the mantle
10
Q
What do we call the place where plates meet?
A
- Plate Margins
11
Q
Why do people continue to live near areas at risk from tectonic hazards?
A
- Fertile volcanic soil
- Tourism
- Employment in the area
- They have always lived there
12
Q
What management strategies can be used to reduce the effects of tectonic hazards?
A
- Monitoring
- Prediction
- Protection
- Planning
- (The Icelandic Met Office developed 3D models for ash so fewer flights are cancelled)
