Taste and Smell Flashcards
ALthough different the two sensory experiences of taste and smell are
intimately entwined
How many taste buds do you have
5000 to 10,000 taste buds.
Taste substances stimulate what?
specialized sensory cells and each taste bud consists of 50-100 of these cells
Taste signlas in the sensory cells are transferred what?
nerve fibers which send impulses along cranial nerves to taste regions in the brainstem
From the cranial nerves to the taste regions, implusels are relayed to
the thalamus and on the erebral cortex for conscious reception of taste
Specialized olfactory receptor cells are located whatr
of mucous membrane linig the roof of the nose.
Axons these sensory cells pass through perforations in the overlyig bone and elongate
olfactory bulbs lying top of the bone
The cilia contain the receptor sites that are stimulated by
airborne odor molecules. These molecules dissolve in the mucous lining in order to stimulate rceptor proteins in the cilia to start the smell response
The pattern of activity set up in receptor cells is
projected o the olfactory bulb where neurons are activated to form a spatial organization
Impulses created by this stimulation pass to the primary
olfactory cortex at the back of the underside or orbita part of the frontal lobe
