Second Messangers Flashcards
Substances that trigger biochemical communication within cells after the acton of neurotransmitters are called
second messangers. THey are responsible for changes to the nervous system
What do the second messanger do?
THey convey the chemical message of a neurotransmitter from the cell memrane to the cell’s internal biochemical machinery
What is an example of the initial step in the activation of a second messanger that involves ATP
When norepinephrine binds to its receptors on the suface of the neuron, the activated receptor binds a G protein on the inside of the membrane
Second messengers are also thought to play a role in the manufacture and release of neurotransmitters and in intracellular movements and carbohydrafe metabolism in the cerebrum
