Hearing Flashcards
Often considered the most important sense for umans, what allows us to communicae with sounds
hearing
Does our hearing system bnd different sounds?
NO, as the visual system does when two different wavelenghts of lght are mixed to produce color
What are the sound waves are collected by
the pinna and external auditory canal and funneled o the tympanic membrane to make it vibrate
Attatched to the tymanic membrane, what transmitsthe vibration to the incus (anvil)
malleus
The Anvil passes the vibration on to the stapes whcih does what?
The stapes pushes on the oval window which separate the air filled middle ear form the fluid inner ear to produce pressure waves in the snail shaped cochea of the inner ear
Dufferent lengths of frequencies allow us to hear
different pitches
Hari cells in the cochlea ridng on the basilar membrane, have hair bundles of
microscopic hairlik stereocillia that are deflected bythe overlying tectorial membrane
What do the Hair cells convert the
mechanical vibration to na electrical signa, tehy excite the 30,000 fibers of the auditory nerve that carry the signals to the brainstem
Because each hair cell rides on a different part of thebasilar membrane, and is each best excited by
a different frequency and so each nerve fiber carries information about a differnt.
Auditory information is analyzed by multiple brain centers as it flows to the
temporal gyrus or auditory cortex
In the auditory cortex the part of the brain involved in
perceiving sound
IN the auditory cortex, adjacent neurons tend to respond to tones of similar frquency BUt, the specialize
in differnt tones
