Task F: Techniques of Flight Instruction Flashcards
Obstacles to Learning
WIPA UA
Work or lack of interest
Impatience
Physical issues (discomfort, illness, fatigue, dehydration)
Apathy due to inadequate instruction
Anxiety

Positive Exchange of Flight Controls - What are they?
Offer: “You have the flight controls.” Look
Accept: “I have the flight controls.” Verify
Acknowledge: “You have the flight controls.” Release
Sterile Cockpit (Flight Deck)
Pilots/Instructors can improve safety by preaching and practicing the sterile flight deck rule.
Refrain from non-essential activities during critical stages of flight. Taxiing, takeoff, and landing, and below 10,000 AGL (except cruise) are considered critical phases of flight.
Use of Distraction
60% of stall/spin accidents occur during takeoff and landing
Instructors.
Instructors can and should intentionally create distractions
Common Types of Assessments Used by CFI’s
RCWP
Review
Collaborative (learner centered grading)
Written
Performance-based
What is Aeronautical Decision Making
ADM
A systematic approach to the mental process used by aircraft pilots to consistently determine the best course of action in response to a given set of circumstances.
Define the Decision Making Process
Define the problem
Choose a course of action
Implement the decision
Evaluate the outcome
Hazardous Attitudes - Anti-Authority
Don’t tell me.
Antidote: Follow the rules.
Hazardous Attitudes - Macho
I can do it.
Antidote: Taking chances is foolish
Hazardous Attitudes - Impulsivity
Do it quickly.
Antidote: Not so fast. Think first.
Hazardous Attitudes - Invulnerability
It won’t happen to me.
Antidote: It could happen to me.
Hazardous Attitudes - Resignation
What’s the use?
Antidote: I’m not helpless. I can make a difference.
Stressors that affect pilot performance
PPP
Physical Stress - environmental
Physiological Stress - fatigue, sleep loss, hungry
Psychological Stress - death, divorce
Use of Resources - Internal
Internal resources are found in the flight deck during flight. However, some of the most valuable internal resources include ingenuity, knowledge, and skill.
