What is an assessment?
The wide variety of methods or tools that educators use to evaluate, measure, document the academic readiness, determine skill acquisition, and meet the educational needs of students
What are the characteristics of an assessment?
COCOFATS
Comprehensive - it covers what is important
Objective - Focuses on Students performance
Constructive - Precise and positive feedback
Organized - logical and makes sense to the student
Flexible - Fit the tone, technique, and content to the occasion
Acceptable - The student needs to accept & have confidence in the instructor
Thoughtful - thoughtfulness toward the student’s self-esteem.
Specific - comments & recommendations need to be specific
What are the characteristics of a good assessment?
DR COVU
Discriminate - does the test have the ability to show differences between students
Reliable - the test results are consistent
Comprehensive - the ability of the test to measure overall objectives
Objective - the instructor’s knowledge and experience, writing style or grammar should not affect the grade
Valid - does the test measure what it is supposed to measure
Usable - is the test easy to give, are the instructions clear and concise
What is an Authentic Assessment?
The purpose of an authentic assessment is to simulate growth in the student’s thought process and behaviors.
What is a Collaborative Assessment?
A collaborative assessment is when the instructor will use open-ended questions to guide the student through a self assessment.

What is an Oral Assessment?
Reveals effectiveness of the instructor’s training
Checks the student’s learner retention
Reviews already presented material
Can be used to retain student interest
Emphasizes the important points of training
Identifies points that need more emphasis
Checks student comprehension
Promotes active student participation

Be brief and concise and clear and definite
Be adapted to the ability, experience, and stage of training
Center only on one idea
Present a challenge to the student

POTBIT
Puzzling - What is the action you should take if a conventional gear airplane with a weak right break is swerving left in a right crosswind
Oversize - What do you do before beginning a flight
Toss-up - Squawk 7700 or pick a landing spot
Bewildering - Altimeter question…from hot to cold, what precautions should you take in the mountains?
Trick Questions - Listing questions with answers in reverse order with letters (e.g. A=4, B = 3, C = 2…
Irrelevant Questions - Ask about tire inflation when testing on an electrical system

Considers good & bad performance
Avoid being overly critical
Critique immediately after a performance
Can be done privately or in a class setting
