What are the requirements to become a CFI

Read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
Hold a commercial or ATP pilot certificate with appropriate category and class ratings.
Logbook endorsement for FOI (§61.185)
Pass the FOI knowledge test (§61.185(a)(1))
Pass the FIA knowledge test (§61.185(a)(2))
Logbook endorsement for the flight training received (§61.187(b)(2))
Pass the practical exam
Logbook endorsement for spin training (§61.183(I)(1))
Must have at least 15 hours of multiengine PIC time
Aeronautical Knowledge (61.185)
An applicant for CFI must receive and log ground training from an authorized instructor on:
The FOIs, specifically: The learning process, elements of effective teaching, student evaluation and testing, course development, lesson planning, and classroom training techniques.
Flight Instructor Records (§61.189)
The name of each person whose logbook that instructor has endorsed for solo flight privileges, and the date of the endorsement; and
the name of each person whom the instructor has endorsed for a knowledge test of practical test, a record of the kinds of tests, the dates, and the results
Each flight instructor must retain the records required by this section for at least 3 years
What are the privileges of a flight instructor? (§61.193 & §61.195)
You may train and issue endorsements for the following:
A student pilot certificate, a pilot certificate, a flight instructor certificate, and aircraft rating, a flight review, operating privilege, or recency of experience, a practical test, a knowledge test.
What are the limitations of a CFI
You may not give more than 8 hours of flight instruction in a 24-hour period
You may not instruct in an aircraft that you are not rated to fly.
Unless you are a CFII, you cannot give instrument instructions
