Symbolic Interactionism
Self arises out of human interaction, which is largely symbolic
(interact mainly in terms of words/ non-verbal cues that are rich with meaning)
Looking-glass self
self derived fron seeing ourselves as others see us
-> we see ourselves as we think others see us
objective self-awareness
aware of yourself as an object
-> comparison how one wants to be
Deindividuation
process whereby people lose their sense of socialised individual identity
Self- discrepancy theory
Theory about consequences of making a comparison between the actual-self and the “ought”-self
-> motivatied to reduce this discrepancies
Promotion system
seek ways to improve ones goals
-> find new challenges and treat problems as interesting obstacles to overcome
Prevention system
avoid new new stituations or new people and concentrate more on avoiding failure than on achieving the highest possible grade
Self-perception theory
gain knowledge of ourselves only by making self-attributions
-> we infer our own attitudes from our own behaviour
Social comparison theory
comparing our behaviours and opinions with those of others
-> to establish correct/ socially approved way of thinking & behaving
BIRGing
Basking in Reflected Glory
link yourself with desirable people or groups and thus improve other people’s impression of you
Meta-contrast principle
Category prototypes accentuate similarities within groups but they also accentuate differences between groups
self-affirmation theory
people reduce the impact of threat through focusing on & affirming our competence in another domain
- > make publicly positive statements about oneself in other domain
- > maintain an image of oneself
Terror management theory
reduce the terror of the fear of death
-> self-esteem may be centrally implicated in effective terror management
