Taping Flashcards
What is the first thing to know before learning to tape?
Human Anatomy
what bone forms lateral malleolus?
fibula
Inversion
turn inward
eversion
turn outwards
dorsiflexion
turning foot (toes go) up
plantarflexion
foot (toes go) pointed down (tippy toes)
distal
farther from point of attachment
proximal
closer to point of attachment
medial
closer to midline
lateral
farther from midline
abnormal/painful walking pattern is called?
Antalagic Gait
Why do we tape?
to prevent injury or to facilitate an injured player to return to play
tape limits?
excessive movement and adds support
DO NOT do what to the tape?
TWIST IT!
Return to play criteria
- injured area regained normal strength, flexibility, and ROM
- Can Preform functional tests at full speed without limping or favoring site
3.Must be physiologically prepared to return to play
KT Tape:
-helps with edema and swelling
-has 140% stretch
Do not twist tape,
Tear it!
Tape overlap,
1/2 the width
wrinkles in tape cause:
blisters and cuts
Tape ankle to protect:
ATFL (anterior tibiofibular ligament), PTFL (posterior talofibular ligament) , 5th metatarsal, lateral malleolus
Strongest Ligament in Body is:
Deltoid Ligament (in ankle)
Start with anchor strip,
end with anchor strip
Need to know how and when you can tape athletes
Need to know how and when you can tape athletes
some athletes need more movement
some athletes need more movement
do proper injury evaluation and understand injury mechanism
do proper injury evaluation and understand injury mechanism
Type of tape:
- Non-elastic (white tape & athletic tape): provides joint support and restricts excessive movement
- Elastic tape and wraps: used for swelling, to secure protective equipment, used when motion needs to remain intact
what is one reason tape won’t tear?
twisted or wrinkled
what is the bony landmark on the foot indicating where the tape should stop?
5th metatarsal
what is the point of pre-wrap?
to protect the skin before tape goes on, prevent blisters & cuts
what can be used instead of pre-wrap?
adhesive spray
what can you do to prevent wrinkles in your taping?
go slow/ take your time
common supplies in taping?
surgical scissors, tape, pre-wrap
what sizes of tape are available?
0.5”, 1”, 1.5”, 2”
purpose of hyperallergenic tape?
reduces skin irritation and helps with latex allergies
explain how to tear athletic tape:
pinch the tape & keep elbows close to body
why is spray adherent used?
to make sure the tape stays secure
what protections do heel and lace pads provide?
protect bony prominence’s from irritation
which strips of tape prevent the ankle from plantarflexing?
stirrups, figure eights
which strips of tape prevent the ankle from spraining (inversion/eversion)?
heel locks, stirrups
what happens if tape is too tight?
cuts off circulation
what can happen if tape has thick wrinkles?
cause blisters, cuts, and discomfort
when an athlete has acute ankle sprain what else can we do besides tape it?
put on a brace, do ankle exercises
name of thick tendon that runs from the gastrocnemius muscle to calcaneous bone?
Achilles Tendon
