Q

Symptoms of heat syncope:

A

lightheaded, dizziness, headache, nausea/vomiting

17
Q

treatment for heat syncope:

A

drink fluids, stop activity immediately

18
Q

What is heat exhaustion?

A

body has trouble dissipating heat

19
Q

symptoms of heat exhaustion:

A

skin PALE, COOL, MOIST. dizziness, nausea/vomiting, weak/rapid pulse

20
Q

treatment for heat exhaustion:

A

move to shade, fluid replacement, cool body, use ice towel

21
Q

What is a heat stroke?

A

MOST SEVERE! Body heat regulation breaks down

22
Q

Symptoms of heat stroke:

A

DRY, HOT SKIN. strong/rapid pulse, unconsciousness

23
Q

treatment for heat stroke:

A

move to cool area, cool immediately (remove excess clothing), ice with towels/ice packs under groin/armpits, misting/fanning, Call 911

24
Q

What is cold stress?

A

body works harder to maintain its temperature

25
Q

5 ways to lose heat?

A

Respiration, evaporation, conduction, radiation, and convection

26
Q

What is respiration?

A

Heat leaves body with every expiration

27
Q

what is evaporation?

A

evaporation of perspiration/other moisture from skin causes body to lose heat

28
Q

What is conduction?

A

body comes into direct contact with cooler object
- Heat goes to cooler object (ex: swimming in cool water)

29
Q

What is radiation?

A

transfer of heat by infrared rays

30
Q

What is convection?

A

heat near body surface removed by moving air
(ex: wind, cool breeze)

31
Q

What is Wind Chill?

A

rate of heat loss on human body from both temp and wind
-near/below 0 degrees F risk frostbite

32
Q

What is hypothermia?

A

Heat from body lost faster than can be replaced

33
Q

Symptoms of hypothermia:

A

temp drops to 95 degrees, shivering, slurred speech, lack of coordination, memory loss, unconsciousness after 85 degrees, death around 78 degrees.

34
Q

Treatment for hypothermia:

A

call 911, restore temp slowly (go indoors, remove wet clothing (trunk first not extremities), wrapping in blankets, DO NOT immerse in warm water, Begin CPR if necessary, give warm fluids

35
Q

What is Frostbite?

A

skin tissue and blood vessels damaged from exposure to temps less than 32 degrees F
-affects toes, fingers, earlobes, chin, cheeks, and nose

36
Q

3 Stages of frostbite?

A

Stage 1= frost nip: pins-needles sensation, skin turns white & soft

Stage 2= Superficial frostbite: may show blistering, skin numb/waxy frozen, ice crystal form from skin

Stage 3= Deep frostbite: freezing muscles/tendons/nerves/blood vessels/bone, leads to permanent damage, no feeling, no blistering, serious infection/loss of limb, medical attention asap.

37
Q

treatment for frostbite:

A

emergency care provided. bring person indoors asap, apply warm water for 20 min, DO NOT use hot water/hold near water, warm fluids, keep areas raised.
