cardiac arrest
heart stops beating suddenly and unexpectedly.
-can cause death if not treated in mins
warning symptoms for cardiac arrest:
chest pain, new onset fatigue, excessive shortness of breath, palpitations/heart racing for no reason, passed out/unconscious during exercise
treatment for cardiac arrest:
Early recognition and call 911, CPR, AED, care at hospital
prevention for cardiac arrest:
comprehensive medical history, physical exam, EKG/Echocardiogram
comprehensive medical history?
identifying family members who have died suddenly before age 40
Signs and symptoms for head/neck/spine injuries:
head/body contorted in unnatural way, numbness in any part of body, tingling sensation in arms/legs, loss of function, unconscious
response (head/neck/spine injuries):
Call 911, stabilize neck/head/shoulders, log roll, preform CPR if needed
prepping for transport (head/neck/spine injuries):
- log roll athlete if in prone position
- must be “rolled” into supine (face up) position in order to access airway
- person at head stays at head until athlete secure
concussion:
traumatic brain injury altering the way the brain functions
signs and symptoms (concussion):
headache/pressure in head, temporary loss of consciousness, confusion, amnesia, dizziness/ “seeing stars”, ringing in ears, nausea/vomiting, slurred speech, delayed response to questions, appearing dazed, fatigue
some delayed or immediate symptoms (concussion):
concentration/memory complaints, irritability/personality changes, sensitivity to light, sleep disturbances, psychological problems and depression, disorders of taste/smell
treatment (concussion):
call 911/go to doctor depending on severity, during 1st 24 hrs someone wake you up every 2-3 hrs, take over-counter medication, rest, avoid sports (until cleared)
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)
brain degeneration caused by repeated head trauma
symptoms (CTE):
impulse control problems, aggression, mood swings, depression, paranoia, anxiety, short term memory loss, confusion, impaired judgement, dememtia
prevention (concussions):
wear helmet, play safe
