T1 L17: Synaptic plasticity Flashcards
How many layers are there in the cortex?
6
What is Hebb’s rule of synaptic plasticity?
Persistent or repetitive activity tends to induce lasting cellular changes that add to it’s stability and efficacy
What are the 2 rules of synaptic modification?
- Neurones that fire together wire together
2. Neurones that fire out of sync lose their link
What is the purpose of strengthening and weakening of synaptic connections?
Allows for learning and memory formation
What is long term potentiation (LTP)?
The mechanism underlying synaptic strengthening
What is temporal long term potentiation (LTP)?
Summation of inputs reaches a stimulus that leads to the induction of an LTP
What is associative long term potentiation (LTP)?
Simultaneous stimulation of a strong and weak pathway will induce and LTP at both pathways
