What are symptoms?
Subjective experiences reported by the individual that cannot be observed
What is Sz?
A psychotic disorder characterised by postive symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations and disorganised thinking, speech and movement. Negative symptoms may also be present e.g. lack of emotion or speech
What are features?
Information about prevalence, age of onset, gender difference, prognosis etc
What is thought insertion?
Believing one’s thoughts have been implanted by an external source
What are hallucinations?
Perceptual experiences which do not correspond with reality
What are delusions?
Fixed beliefs that are resistant to change and implausible to people of the same cultural background
What is disordered thinking?
Jumbled and unrelated thoughts leading to incoherent speech
How many symptoms (out of 4) does the DSM-5 to be diagnosed with Sz?

To be diagnosed with Sz, what must one of the symptoms be?
Delusion, hallucinations or disorganised speech/thought
What ages does Sz appear in females?
Late 20s
What ages does Sz appear in males?
Early 20s
Who has poor prognosis in Sz?
Males
Females are over- presented in late onset cases (40+)
What percentage of clinicians said they lacked confidence in their diagnosis of Sz using the ICD-10?

Why is it not easy to diagnose Sz?
It shares symptoms with various other disorders.
E.g halluciantions and PTSD
What is a problem with identifying disordered thinking linking to cutltural difference?
It can be difficult if the client is from a different cultural background from the psychiatrist.
E.g. may see conventions as a sign of disorganised thinking
