How do FGA’s reduce symptoms of SZ?
They bind to D2 receptors
What are some side effects to using FGA’s?
Tardive dyskinesia- stiff or slow, writhing movements of your face and body that you can control
Why are SGA different to FGA?
They not only act on blocking dopamine but also acts additionally to serotonin and glutamate
Why are SGA’s better thean FGA’s?
They reduce both positive and negative symptoms of SZ
What is a side effect of SGA’s?
Potentially fatal blood condition but patients have lots of blood tests to prevent this from happening
Why is Risperidone better than other antipsychotics?
It binds more strongly to dopamine receptors and so therfore can be prescribed in smaller doses
What does Patal review on the efficency of medication for SZ?
She explains the importance of starting medication use quickly in order to have most effective
In the first 7 days following a psychotic episode, the objective is to try and decrease hostility and return the client to normal functioning
60-80% of people who do not tke a maintenance dosage relapse
18-32% of people who do take a maintennce dosage
Dosage should be maintained for at least 12 months
What can disrupt the effectiveness of antipsychotic medications for SZ?
Amphetamines, alcholo, caffein and nicotine
What did Pickar show about clopazine?
Showed it was more effective with the placebo being the least effective when 21 SZ patients were given either a placebo, clopazine or fluphenazine
