AN- One non-biological treatment Flashcards
What are some non-biological treatments used for AN?
- CBT
-TEP
What type of learning theory is used to get sufferers of AN to eat?
Operant conditioning
Eating food is reinforces by the use of tokens
Tokens can be exchanged for privileges such as make up, outings and watching favourite TV programmes
What should the token be in TEP for AN?
Anything the patient and carers decide together
What should the target behaviours be for TEP for AN?
Achievable and realistic
Not purging after meals
Increasing weight
Having more calories in their meals
Why must there be a recording progress for people with AN in TEP?
Review and feedback gives the chance to reflect and receive positive feedback on progress act as good motivators for encouraging behaviour
What was the case study by Sonoda et al who supports TEP as an effective non-biological treatment?
A token was rewarded after each kilo gained
After acquiring 4 tokens she would be rewarded with a coveted bicycle
At first weight gain was slow but reached her target of 25kg in 9 months
Follow up study showed she continued normal weight gain
What did Field et al discover about the an effectiveness of TEP and group work with people with behavioural problems?
Found that although the programmes were effective on the whole there were still a few who didn’t respond
Therefore special programmes was put in place for these non responsive youth and was successful
Shows that programme has to be carefully designed so that it suits the individual
What are some strengths about TEP?
- Supporting research- credible
- Flexible with other treatments
- Easy to measure progress
- Less risky than drug therapy
- Flexible to adjust to individuals
What are some weaknesses of TEP?
- Only a short term fix (might change behaviour if reinforcement stops)
- Can be a form of social control in clinical settings
- Practical issues of being consistent
- Studies have limited sample size
- Doesn’t tackle all symptoms of Anorexia
