What is Anorexia Nervosa (AN)??
An eating disorder characterised by self-induced weight loss, fear of gaining weight and disturbances of body image.
What are the 3 key symptoms of AN?
- Restriction of energy intake
- Fear of weight/ interfering behaviours
- Disturbed experience of body weight/shape
What does the ICd-10 defines having a significantly low body weight as?
15% below expected or BMI is 17.5 or less
What examples of having a fear of weight gain does the ICD-10 give?
Self induced vomiting or purging
Excessive exercising
Using appetite suppressants
What is body image distortion?
Weight or shape has a disproportionate influence on the persons self evaluation
How many men get anorexia?
1 in 1000 cases of AN are men
What age group is peak AN incidence ?
16-20
Does AN have the highest mortality of all mental disorders??
