Systems - Flight Controls Flashcards
How is the elevator operated?
Mechanically with no hydraulic assist (cables and pulleys) with no hydraulic assist.
How is elevator assist provided at high wing loading?
2 tabs on each side; servo and spring.
Where are the Servo Tabs located and what is their primary purpose? Where are the spring tabs located and what is there primary purpose?
1) Servo Tabs - Outer tabs, primary purpose is to assist at slower speeds (primary control suface has to move first.
2) Spring Tabs - Inner tabs, primary purpose is to assit at higer speeds.
What is a general rule of control tabs?
They move in the opposite direction of the primary control system you want to move.
How is each pilot connected to the flight controls?
Directly to their on-side controls with a torque tube at the pilot seats.
What happens when you pull the elevator disconnect?
Pulls the cable to a disconnection device and separate one side from the other in case of a jammed elevator.
Once the elevator disconnect is pulled, which side flight controls will work and what kind of elevator control will they have?
The side that is not jammed will work but with only half control (applies to aileron as well).
What is a positive indication of an elevator or aileron disconnect?
The light will illuminate (not handle position).
Once pulled, can disconnect be reset by pilots?
No, only by MX.
How is pitch trim operated on the EMB-145?
electrically commanded and electrically operated with an all moving horizontal stabilizer (no trim tabs).
How many pitch trim channels are there?
Two - main and backup
How is the main pitch trim channel controlled?
Yolk thumb switches on both Capt and FO sides.
Which pitch trim thumb switch has priority?
Capt
Can both the main and backup trim motors be activated at the same time? Which has priority?
No, only one at a time. The priority is first come first serve.
What is the HSCU?
Horizontal Stabilzer Control Unit - brains of the trim system
What logic do all three pitch trim split switches follow?
1) If you hold them them split for more than 7 seconds, it will disable the switch
2) Accumulated trim inputs of 16 seconds or more without control surface movement will dis-able the channel.
3) Trim inputs are limited to 3 seconds at a time (to help stop runaway trim).
When is automatic trim activated?
1) Through the autopilot (pitch only)
2) With speed brake deployment (when slow).
Is pitch trim speed consistent?
No
- If you are going slow, trim will be fast
- If you are going fast, trim will be slow.
When you push the QD button, what trim controls are interrupted?
All of them (pitch, yaw and roll).
How can pitch trim be read externally and what are the indications?
Top of horizontal stabilizer. 10° up and 4° down.
