Q

What is a carburetor?

What is the difference between the throttle and mixture?

A

In float-type carburetors, outside air flows through an air filter, usually located right around the intake at the front of the engine cowling. Filtered air flows through the carburetor (volume of air controlled by the throttle) and through a narrow throat in the carburetor called a venturi. As air flows through this venturi, pressure drops, and fuel is forced into a fuel jet at the throat of the carburetor. The fuel is then mixed with air, creating a mixture perfect for combustion.

The mixture needle is your way to change the fuel/air ratio entering the engine.

20
Q

If your mags run rough on a run up, what does that mean and what will you do?

A

Engine roughness while checking the magnetos during runup could indicate a fouled spark plug or other ignition system problem. Accelerate the engine to runup rpm and lean the mixture until the engine runs rough. Let the engine run for about 30 seconds. Enrich the mixture then check the mags again. If this doesn’t clear the roughness, have the ignition system checkedby a mechanic before flying.

21
Q

VOR basics

A

Radials radiate from the VOR

If “from” flag and centered then that is the radial you are on

If you heading does not match the from direction then you need to put that radial at the bottom of the VOR so you are flying the reciprocal

If you want to fly to the VOR then you need a to flag and that heading should be similar to the heading of your plane

22
Q

What is a VOR full scale deflection?

A

When your CDI is 10 deg or more away from your selected course

23
Q

How do you test the accuracy of the VOR accuracy?

A

VOT
- VOR test facility while on the ground, 360 deg radial,
-turn the OBS to a heading 180 should center w/ a To indication (if you set 360 then center w/ a from indication)
- +/- 4 deg

VOR checkpoint
1) ground checkpoint, where to go on airport surface and what radial, +/- 4 deg

2) airborne checkpoint, where to go and what radial, +/- 6 deg

Memory aide: 4 on the floor and 6 over the fix

24
Q

If you are 1 degree off course and 60 miles from the VOR station, how far off course are you?

A

60 miles is 1 miles between the radials for 1 deg

60 miles is 2 miles between the radial is 2 deg
30 miles is 1/2 so 2 deg of deflection you would be 1 mile off course

25
Q

Altimeter accuracy?

A

Comparing it w/ known field evaluation… +/- 75’ your accuracy is questionable and should be referred to a repair station
