Systemic Circulation Flashcards
Hyperlipidemia*
Abnormally elevated levels of lipids or lipoproteins in the blood
Very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)
Made from the liver for the export of triglycerides
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
Carries and delivers cholesterol to cells where it used in membranes or for synthesis (main carrier of cholesterol)
High-density Lipoprotein (HDL)
Transport cholesterol back to liver and remove cholesterol deposited in the walls of blood vessels (clean-up crew)
Hypolipoproteinemia
Disorder resulting from the inability to break down lipids or fats in your body specifically cholesterol and triglycerides
Artherosclerosis
Disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries
Risk Factors for Artherosclerosis
Hypercholesterolemia Smoking Hypertension Family history Men older than 45, women older than 55 HDL cholesterol less than 40
Complications of Artherosclerosis
Ischemic heart disease Coronary artery disease Stroke Pulmonary embolism Peripheral vascular disease
Atheroma
Reversible accumulation of degenerative material in the inner layer of an artery wall
Embolism
A material that causes blockage inside a blood vessel, can be blood clot, fat or gas
Acute Arterial Occlusion
When blood flow to an artery stops ( usually referring to the leg causing tissue to die)
Intermittent Claudication
Condition in which cramping pain in leg when walking, caused by obstruction of the arteries
-insufficient oxygen of muscles
Artherosclerosis Obliterans
Arterial Disease that affects the aorta and arteries of the lower extremities
Venous Ulcers Assessment
Occurs due to poor venous return in legs
Treatment: antiembolic stockings, elevate legs
