Q

Define detonation and pre-ignition.

a. What should you do if either are suspected?

A
  • Detonation - uncontrolled firing of the fuel/air mixture within a cylinder. Usually caused by increased engine temperature or lower grade fuel.
  • Pre-ignition - Occurs when the fuel/air mixture ignites prematurely. Usually caused by a residual hot spot in the combustion chamber, often created by a carbon deposit on a spark plug.
    a. Discontinue the flight ASAP, as they can cause engine damage. Also try
