System Malfunctions and Emergency Procedures Flashcards
1
Q
Define detonation and pre-ignition.
a. What should you do if either are suspected?
A
- Detonation - uncontrolled firing of the fuel/air mixture within a cylinder. Usually caused by increased engine temperature or lower grade fuel.
- Pre-ignition - Occurs when the fuel/air mixture ignites prematurely. Usually caused by a residual hot spot in the combustion chamber, often created by a carbon deposit on a spark plug.
a. Discontinue the flight ASAP, as they can cause engine damage. Also try
2
Q
What should you do if you get a high RPM drop (>175) during magneto check during run up?
A
Run high RPMs for 1-2 minutes, lean the mixture towards peak EGT, then recheck.
3
Q
What should you do following an engine fire on the ground?
A
- If the engine doesn’t start - continue cranking to suck flames back into the engine
- If engine does start - run for another minute, then shut down and inspect the damage
4
Q
What is the minimum altitude you can descend to during a simulated emergency descent?
A
500ft AGL
5
Q
What is CFIT?
A
Controlled flight into terrain. Can be caused by poor visibility or poor situational awareness
6
Q
If the vacuum system fails, what 2 instruments would fail?
A
Attitude indicator and heading indicator
