Q

What are the 2 main fundamentals of a gyroscope?

A

Rigidity in space - Based on Newton’s first law “a body in motion tends to move at a constant speed and direction unless disturbed by an external force
Precession - When a force is applied to a spinning gyro, it will be applied as if the force had been applied 90 degrees in the direction of rotation

Q

Name the compass errors

A

VDMONA

  • Variation - true vs. magnetic
  • Deviation - error from instrument electrical signals
  • Magnetic dip - towards the poles
  • Oscillation - Turbulence, cracks or bubbles can increase it
  • Northerly turning error - UNOS
  • Acceleration/deceleration - ANDS
