Aircraft Systems Flashcards
What are the 4 control surfaces?
Ailerons, rudder, elevator, flaps
What is the purpose of flaps?
Increase drag and lift while decreasing airspeed.
What are the 4 strokes of an engine?
Induction, compression, power, exhaust
Why is there an RPM drop when turning on carb heat?
We are adding heat to the engine, which decreases performance.
Why is the battery lower voltage than the system?
To allow the battery to charge.
Which instruments are gyroscopic?
Attitude indicator, heading indicator, and turn coordinator
What are the 2 main fundamentals of a gyroscope?
Rigidity in space - Based on Newton’s first law “a body in motion tends to move at a constant speed and direction unless disturbed by an external force
Precession - When a force is applied to a spinning gyro, it will be applied as if the force had been applied 90 degrees in the direction of rotation
Name the compass errors
VDMONA
- Variation - true vs. magnetic
- Deviation - error from instrument electrical signals
- Magnetic dip - towards the poles
- Oscillation - Turbulence, cracks or bubbles can increase it
- Northerly turning error - UNOS
- Acceleration/deceleration - ANDS
