Cross Country Flight Planning Flashcards
What are the two most common ways to navigate?
Pilotage and dead reckoning
What is an isogonic line?
A line of equal magnetic variation
What is magnetic variation?
The difference between magnetic north and true north.
How do you convert true to magnetic?
Add or subtract magnetic variation.
What is a VOR?
Very high frequency omni-range.
- Directs a omni-directional frequency 360 degrees that pilots can use to navigate
What is an NDB?
- Non-directional beacon
- Radio transmitter at a known location
What is RNAV?
- Area navigation
- Allows aircraft to fly between a network of navaids
What is GPS?
- A network of orbiting satellites (27 total, 24 in use, 3 backup)
- 4 are needed to provide a pinpoint location - 3 to triangulate position, 1 to verify it
What are the different methods for checking a VOR’s accuracy?
- Ground checks - designated area on the airport, tune to a specific frequency at a specific heading and note accuracy - must be within plus or minus 4 degrees
- Airborne checks - Tune to a certain frequency at a specific heading and note accuracy - must be within plus or minus 6 degrees
What is DME?
Distance measuring equipment
- Measures slant range in NM
What are the 4 C’s of lost procedures?
- Confess - Admit to yourself that you are lost
- Communicate - Call ATC and tell them you’re lost
- Climb - So you can see more
- Conserve - Fuel
How do you activate a VFR flight plan?
Call an FSS, with tower, in Foreflight
When are you required to file a VFR flight plan?
- Anytime you are flying across an international border, you must file a DVFR flight plan
- Otherwise, you are not required to file a flight plan, but it is strongly recommended.
What is CRM?
- Crew resource management
