Syncretism & No People Crucified On Cross In Date Range Of jesus Flashcards

Q

Back in the days of Jesus, clear up until the 4th century of Constantine, people were not crucified upon a cross. Everyone crucified in this time period and for centuries before were crucified upon a straight wooden stake. Most of the time their hands were nailed to the stake over their head. Ref for crucifixtion on cross, encyclopedia Britannica.

People used to carry a stock (pillary) upon their shoulder with holes for their hands to fit through. As history progressed, the criminal would be marched through the city streets carrying this stock to the crucifixion location, then they removed this pillary to crucify the criminal upon the stake. Later in history, they simply nailed the pillary to the stake and this was how the cross for crucifixion was invented.

Q

People who were crucified were usually left on their stake as food for scavengers, and part of the punishment for ignominious crimes was being tossed into a common grave, where very soon one decomposed body could not be distinguished from another. In the traditions about Jesus, of course, his body had to be distinguished from all others; otherwise, it could not be demonstrated to have been raised physically from the dead.

If the Romans followed their normal policies and customs, and if Pilate was the man whom all our sources indicate he was, then it is highly unlikely that Jesus was decently buried on the day of his execution in a tomb that anyone could later identify. Ref: How Jesus became God. — Bart D. Ehrman.

My note:

( I agree. Unusual to take the crucified body off the stake. But to show he was risen, he had to have a body which was written into the narrative so the authors could claim Jesus was risen!

Normally, the criminal rotted to pieces of meat which birds and dogs fed upon. Then the remains were shoveled into a mass grave. So they had to change the story so he had a body left to be risen.)

Q

Now just think for a few minutes. If There was a man called Jesus, and he was risen from the dead after dying and disfigured on a cross like the Bible says. Wouldn’t you think this miracle would have made the news!

I mean he hangs around town for another 40 days alive and no mention of this in Roman history!

This is an Earth shaking miracle yet not a single mention in any country’s history!

Wouldn’t you think the soldiers would grab him and kill him again?

What about the 500 dead people he resurrected? These people were walking around during this forty day period. No mention of this in anybody’s history either.

What did these 500 skeletons do being alive years after their flesh rotted away. Wouldn’t that draw a lot of attention?

Not a single word about it in recorded history.

What about Jesus returning before the last of his disciples and the high priest died. Jesus promised this seven times in the Bible, yet it’s been over 2,000 years and he is a no show.
