Symptomatology Flashcards
A healthy liver is essential for:
maintaining an adequate amount of blood flow to the heart.
Symptoms of an underactive stomach can sometimes be confused with those of an overactive
stomach (heartburn). This leads to:
use of antacids, which aggravates the condition. – Regular use of
antacids interferes with the production of natural acid in the stomach, leading to poor digestion and
malabsorption.
Vitamin C with bioflavonoids may benefit:
absorption only if bioflavonoids are equal to or greater than the level of C.
Muscle weakness, tenderness and joint stiffness may be linked to
hypothyroidism.
- Signs of deficiency of vitamin K:
– abnormal nosebleeds, blood in urine, bruises of unknown origin,
prolonged clotting time, osteoporosis, hemorrhagic disease of the newborn – gross deficiency = internal hemorrhage.
Plays a role in building healthy bones, and manufacture of blood clotting and factor for excessive menstrual bleeding. Gut bacteria can produce vit K so not generally recommended as a supplement.
Deficiency is rare.
Vitamin E supplementation is vital for diabetics bc?
it is fat soluble and absorption is dependent
on both pancreatic secretions and bile (liver/gall bladder) and insufficiency of either may lead to deficiency.
Oversensitivity and overreaction to situations are psychological traits that could be linked to
colon diseases. – Ignoring messages of the physical body will lead to constipation and bowel problems. Stress and anxiety unresolved over a long period are often an overlooked cause of colon trouble.
Hidden allergies can be an underlying cause of:
high blood pressure. (also smoking, sodium intake, stress, excess weight, toxicity).
If food allergy suspected consider – caffeine intake, gluten, nightshade
family, thiamine containing foods (aged cheeses, saw palmetto, avocado, yeast extract, sauerkraut, liver,
fermented soy products)
A thyroid gland disorder can indicate a potential for:
osteoporosis. Other factors include – positive
family history, short stature and small bones, leanness, inactivity, smoking, heavy alcohol use and the
use of corticosteroid drugs.
T/F?B vitamins have a mild calming effect when taken at night.
– FALSE
- B vitamins DO NOT have a mild calming effect when taken at night. They should be taken at meal time
in a B complex formula and replenished during the day (because they are water soluble and only remain
the body for 6-8 hours). They act as mild stimulants so should not be taken at night.
The symptoms of folic acid deficiency and B 12 deficiency are:
similar. Symptoms in common
include – sore red tongue, fatigue, irritability
Folic acid works synergistically
with B12 and is critical to cellular division. Folic acid is necessary for healthy brain function (considered
brain food) and along with B12 is commonly used for depression and anxiety.
When the gallbladder is surgically removed, the flow of bile in the duodenum:
becomes irregular – causing problems of too much or too little bile in the system.
Long-term use of medications may cause
choline deficiency. Also a diet high in animal fats and
sugars are the other main causes of deficiency.
What are the best sources of chromium?
Best sources are meat,
shellfish, clams, brewer’s yeast, whole grains and cereals.
How does Vitamin B 5 work with choline in the synthesis of cholesterol
Choline is needed for cholesterol
metabolism (lecithin formation) – without choline, which is an active ingredient in bile, fats become
trapped in the liver where they block metabolism.
Cold hands and feet are symptoms of both
the cardiovascular system and an underactive thyroid.
Indicators of an imbalance of pantothenic acid
chances are that the adrenal glands will show underactivity – the main indicator (depleter) of stress is correspondingly linked to allergies, PMS, candida, hypoglycemia and
endocrine disorders – Deficiency is linked to most immune function disorders. – Symptoms – fatigue, CV
problems, upper respiratory infections, depression, numbness and tingling in extremities, abdominal
pain, burning feet, fissures from the sides of mouth
What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a substance found in all animal fats and oils and it is a necessary element in our diet. It
is a steroid component of cell membranes and a substrate for the synthesis of steroid hormones
(important in the regulation of tissue metabolism and mineral balance) and bile salts (req for the normal
processing of dietary fats).
What depletes magnesium?
Excessive water intake may flush out magnesium from the system. Depletion can also result from
long term use of diuretics, alcoholism, poor nutrition, diarrhea, diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperthyroid,
kidney diease and short term use of antibiotics.
If the five-daily basal body temp readings consistently fall below 97.6 F, may be suggestive of
low thyroid function.
Nutritional Symptomatology is
the study of the symptoms related to nutrition.
Salt cravings indicate:
low adrenal function. Excess sodium intake strains the kidneys and adrenals However, A total salt-free diet is NOT recommended for high blood pressure.
Symptoms of vitamin E deficiency:
Heart disease, premature aging, weakness, irritability, diarrhea,
poor skin condition, brittle hair, muscle wasting, muscular dystrophy.
Folic acid is an important catalyst in the synthesis of :
amino acids, and assists in energy production
and the formation of blood cells. Folic acid deficiency in a pregnant woman is linked to birth defects.
Folic acid works synergistically with B12 and is critical to cellular division.
Cankers, fissures in the corner of the mouth, indicate a deficiency of:
Riboflavin (vitamin B 2 ) and niacin (vitamin B 3 ).
B12 (cobalamin) plays an important role in
the health of the nervous system. It is stored in the liver, kidneys and other body tissues.
