Symbiosis Flashcards
What is symbiosis?
An intimate relationship between two different species
Name the 2 types of symbiotic relationship.
parasitism & mutualism
How would you sum up parasitism?
One species benefits
One species is harmed
How would you sum up mutualism?
Both benefit
Give an example of mutualism.
- Egyptian plover and crocodile
- Sloth and algae
- oxpeckers and herbivores
- Clownfish and sea anemone
Why do parasites need hosts?
They often have a limited metabolism and cannot survive out of contact with a host.
In what way do parasites benefit?
It gains energy or nutrients
How are hosts harmed?
The loss of energy or nutrients
State 3 ways parasites can be transmitted.
- direct contact
- resistant stages
- vectors
How does a resistant stage help?
They can survive for long periods until they come into contact with a new host
What is a vector?
Another species that transfers the parasite to a new host.
Give an example of a common vector.
mosquitoes (vector)transmit plasmodium (parasite)
What is a secondary host?
A host that has the parasite for a short period during its developmental stage (NOT mature or sexually reproduce in this host)
What is mutualism?
Where both partner species benefit in an interdependent relationship.
