Components of Biodiversity Flashcards
State the 3 components of biodiversity.
- genetic diversity
- species diversity
- ecosystem diversity
What is genetic diversity?
The number and frequency of alleles in a population
Why are all populations within a species important?
If we lose one population, we potentially lose some of its genetic diversity
What is the advantage of greater genetic diversity?
Greater ability to adapt to changing conditions
What two things make up species diversity?
- species richness
2. relative abundance
What does species richness mean?
The number of different species in an ecosystem
What does the term relative abundance mean?
The proportion of each species in the ecosystem
A community with one dominant species will tend to have greater/lower species diversity?
lower
What is ecosystem diversity?
The number of distinct ecosystems within an area.
