Syllables Flashcards
What are syllables?
Syllables are how we split a word up into sounds.
How many types of syllables are there?
Two: closed syllables and open syllables.
What is a closed syllable?
A closed syllable ends with a consonant and has a short vowel sound.
What is an open syllable?
An open syllable ends with a vowel and has a long vowel sound.
How do you divide open syllables?
Divide an open syllable before the consonant. Example: mi/ser. The syllable ends with long vowel i and is an open syllable. The second syllable ser ends with short vowel sound, ends in a consonant and is a closed syllable
How do you divide closed syllables?
- Divide the syllable between two consonants in the middle of a word. Example: pen/cil
- Divide between the 2 consonants when the 2 middle consonants are the same. Example: pil/low
How do you divide a word into syllables when two vowels next to each other have two different sounds?
The first vowel is usually long, so we divide between the vowels.
Example: ru/in
Vowel teams are treated like one vowel when the first vowel is long and the second vowel is silent. How do we divide the word into syllables?
Keep the vowel teams together when dividing the word into syllables.
Example: bea/ver
Another vowel team creates a new vowel sound. This is called a diphthong. How do we divide a word that has a diphthong into syllables?
Always keep the diphthongs together when dividing words into syllables.
Example: toi/let
Can a vowel form an open syllable by itself?
Yes.
Example: a/corn
How do you divide a word with a prefix or suffix into syllables?
A prefix is a syllable by itself.
Example: re/lax
A suffix is a syllable by itself
Example: Wait/ing
Consonant blends such as ch, ph, sh and th that make one new sound are treated as one Consonant. How do you divide a word with Consonant blends into syllables?
Keep the Consonant blends together when dividing words into syllables.
Example: dol/phin
Rath/er
How do you divide words that end in ckle into syllables?
Divide before the le.
Example: tack/le
How do you divide words that end in le (except ckle) into syllables?
Divide before the consonant
Example: bu/gle
Han/dle
