Sustainable Urban Living 🌍 Flashcards
What is sustainable living?
living in a way that lets people meet their needs now, without reducing the ability of people to meet their needs in the future
Why is it unlikely that big cities will ever be sustainable?
they need lots of resources for a lot of people
How do water conservation schemes reduce the amount of water used?
- collecting rainwater for gardens or toilets
- installing toilets that flush less water
- installing water meters so people pay for excess water used
- encouraging people to use less water
How do energy conservation schemes reduce the amount of energy used?
- promote renewable energy over coal or gas fired station
- encourage people to make their homes more energy efficient
- making sure all new homes meet minimum energy efficiency requirements
- encouraging people to use cars less
How can creating green spaces ensure the city is pleasant and good to live and work in?
- provide naturally cooler areas where people can relax in hot weather
- encourage people to exercise more and use alternative transport making people healthier and less stressed
- make people feel happier by providing break from noisy city
What are the environmental benefits of green spaces?
they reduce:
- air pollution by creating pockets of clean air
- the risk of flooding by reducing surface runoff when it rains
Why should we use recycling schemes?
- means fewer resources are used
- less waste is produced which reduces landfill (unsustainable)
Waste recycling schemes include what?
- kerbside collection of recyclable materials
- building recycling facilities to deal with larger items
- websites (e.g. Freecycle) where items are offered for free so they can be used by others instead of being thrown away
