What is the definition of sustainability?
Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
What are some common environmental risks on construction sites?
- Water pollution
- Air and noise pollution
- Land contamination
What are the key pieces of legislation relating to sustainability?
The Environment Act 2021
- Requires the Secretary of State to set at least one long term target in four key areas: air quality, biodiversity, water and waste.
The Building Act 1984
- Enforces the building regulations
What is the key approved document relating to sustainability?
Part L - Conservation of fuel and power
What are the codes of practice for measuring sustainability?
BREEAM - Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method
SKA ratings - RICS assessment method for non domestic fit outs
What are MEES?
Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards
Brought in to improve the standard of buildings. Minimum EPC rating of E, could increase to a B by 2030. Exemptions for listed buildings/if no works can increase the EPC etc.
Enforced by local authorities. Sanctions are fines.
