Sustainability Flashcards
Define Sustainable Development
Addressing the needs of today without sacrificing the needs of tomorrow.
Pillars of Sustainability
Economic: using financial resources efficiently enough to address current requirements and address future problems
Social: either not impacting societal needs or improving them - examples are playgrounds for children, schools etc
Environmental: more “mainstream” version - focus on decarbonisation of energy sources, reducing carbon output, reducing waste etc
Sustainable technology I’ve used
On my mains replacement projects, I started to use a non-intrusive audio assessment of pipe condition. This impacts all three pillars of sustainability:
Social: less disruptive to customers - no need to close roads or set up traffic lights.
Economical: cheaper, and can help guide the project specing more accurately
Environmental: less energy required to do these assessments, less transporting of waste.
Building Regulations Part L
Heat Loss/Energy Gain. Applies to dwellings or buildings - both new and existing.
- requirements:
- More efficient boilers
- Air Pressure testing for buildings
- Energy Saving Insulation
- Energy performance requirements
