suspension and colloids Flashcards
what is a homogenous mixture?
a mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout the mixture
what are heterogenous mixture?
a mixture that is not uniform in composition
what is suspension?
all heterogenous mixtures are suspensions. defines as a heterogenous mixture in which the solid particles are spread throughout the liquid without dissolving in it.
E.g sand
what is a solution?
a homogenous mixture of two or more substances
what is a colloid?
mixture in which very small particles of one substance are distributed evenly throughout another substance.
- an intermediate state between solution and suspension
what is the difference between suspension and colloid?
in a colloid the particle size is 1-1000nm in suspension (it is greater), it is 1000nm
examples of suspensions?
muddy water
sand in water
flour in water
examples of colloids?
fog
smoke
dust in air
what are common uses of colloids in nature and medicine?
- exists naturally e.g mist, clouds
- important role in transfer of nutrients and pollutants in the environment
- is a mixture of protein and polysaccharide
- colloids are more effective in medicine because they have a larger surface area
what are some colloids?
aerosols foams emulsions sols gels
what is an aerosol?
when you add a liquid particles to a gas medium. E.g perfume, fog
what is a solid aerosol?
occur when solid particles combine with gas medium. E.g smoke
what are foams?
is created when you add gas particles to a liquid medium. E.g whipped cream
what is a solid foam?
formed when gas particles combine with solid medium. E.g memory foam
what is emulsion?
are colloids in which liquid particles combine with liquid medium. E.g milk
