alloys Flashcards
what are alloys?
is a substance made by melting two or more elements together and at least one of them being a pure metal
why are alloys made?
many pure metals are too soft to many uses. they can be made harder by adding another element, this often has many more uses
how are atoms arranged in a pure metal?
giant metallic structure, arranged in layers. when a force is applied, the layers may slide over each other. the stronger the force, the harder and stronger the metal will be
how does an alloy strengthen a metal?
the alloy distort the layers of atoms making it harder and stronger
characteristics of an alloy?
- stronger and harder
- less malleable
- less ductile
- more durability
- more corrosion resistant
- more tensile stress and toughness
what are common alloys?
amalgam
solder
bronze
titanium alloy
what is the use of amalgam?
alloy of mercury, dental filling to fill cavities
strong and durable
what is the use of solder?
alloy of tin and lead
used in circuit bonds
low melting point
what is the use of bronze?
alloy of copper and tin
statues, medals
is corrosion resistance
what is the use of titanium?
allow of titanium and aluminium
aircrafts
high tensile stress and corrosion resistance
