rates of chemical reaction Flashcards
what is collision theory?
is used to predict the rate of chemical reactions
what is activation energy?
is needed to reactants can move together, overcome forces of repulsion, and start breaking bonds
- for a chemical reaction to occur, the reactant molecules must collide with enough energy. the minimum kinetic energy required for a reaction to occur is called activation energy
what factors increase the rate of reaction?
- surface area
- temp
- pressure
- light intensity
- concentration
how does temp affect the rate of reaction?
raises the kinetic energy of the reactant molecules. therefore, more collisions
how does surface area affect the rate of reaction?
more particles are exposed to other reactants, so there is a greater chance of particles colliding
how does pressure affect the rate of reaction?
when increasing the pressure, the molecules have less space in which they can move the greater density of molecules increases the number of collisions. when you decrease the pressure, molecules don’t hit each other as often and the rate pf reaction decreases
how does light intensity affect the rate of reaction?
the more light intensity there is, the more reactant molecules is likely to gain more activation energy
what is a catalysts?
is a substance that causes or accelerates a chemical reaction without it being affected
how does a catalysts work?
a catalysts provided an alternative force for the reaction to take place with a lower activation energy
what is the catalysts in the Haber process?
- making ammonia: iron is the catalysts
what is the catalysts in the contact process?
making sulfuric acid: vanadium oxide is the catalysts
