Q

what is the lock and key model of an enzyme?

A

the shape of the active site matches the shape of its substrate molecules
- this makes the enzyme highly specific. each type of enzyme can catalyse one type of a reaction or only a few

Q

what is the effect of PH on enzyme activity?

A

each enzyme has an optimum PH range. changing the PH outside of this range will slow enzyme activity. extreme PH values can cause enzymes to denature

  • increasing enzyme concentration will speed up the reaction as long as there is a substrate available to bind to
