polymers Flashcards
what is a polymer?
is a chemical compound with molecules bonded together in long, repeating chains
what is the structure of a polymer?
each polymer molecule is made up smaller units of monomers
characteristics of polymers?
- there are intermolecular forces of attraction between polymers molecules
- high surface area, a lot of intermolecular forces, so a lot of energy is needed to break these forces
- high melting point
what is polymerisation?
is the process in which the small monomer units join together to form a large polymer molecule
what is a monomer?
a molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer
what is a repeating unit?
recurring unit of a polymer
what bonds do polymers have?
single carbon. covalent bonds. means they are strong
what is an addition polymer?
is the type of polymerisation reaction that occurs when you take the monomers and add them together
what is condensation polymerisation?
for this to take place there must be 2 different monomers. each monomer has to have at least two of the same functional group
what is the difference between monomers and polymer?
monomers join via carbon-carbon double bond whereas in polymers there is only a single bond
