Surgical Fluids & Math QUIZ & LAB Flashcards
A cat is on anesthesia fluid rate of 3ml/kg/hr. If the cat weighs 4kg and is in surgery for 2 hours, how many fluids will she receive during the anesthesia period?
24ml
4kg x 3ml = 12ml/hr x 2hr = 24ml/2hrs
The concentration of furosemide (Lasix) is 5%, how many milligrams are in 0.5ml?
a. 150mg
b. 50mg
c. 2.5mg
d. 25mg
d. 25mg
5% = 5 gm /100 ml = 5000mg/ 100 ml = 50mg/1mL or 50mg/mL
50mg/mL / 2 = 25mg/0.5mL
A cat on IV fluids must receive 20ml/hr of normal saline (0.9%). If this cat is on a microdrip (60 gtt/ml), how many drops per second should be the rate?
a. 1gtt/3sec
b. 3gtt/sec
c. 16gtt/sec
d. 1gtt/6sec
a. 1gtt/3sec
gtt/sec = (ml/hr x drop factor) / 3600sec
20ml x 60 gtt = 1200 gtt
1200gtt/60min = 20gtt/60sec = 0.33gtt x 3sec = 1gtt/3sec
How much IV fluids has this patient received?
300mL
What is the fluid deficit for a 8# cat with 7% dehydration?
a. 251mL
b. 318mL
c. 56mL
d. 120mL
a. 251mL
or 252mL
1kg = 1000mL of water
8 pounds = 3.6kg (divide pounds by 2.2 to get kg)
7% = 0.07
3.6kg x 0.07 = 0.254kg*
0.254kg x 1000mL = 251mL
*3.6kg x 0.07 = 0.252kg x 1000mL = 252mL
2% lidocaine is prescribed for a 13# Beagle at a dose of 2mg/kg IV (bolus). How many milliliters will you administer?
a. 0.17mL
b. 1.7mL
c. 0.6mL
d. 6mL
c. 0.6mL
2% = 2gm/100mL
13# = 5.9kg (divide # by 2.2 = kg)
2mg/kg (IV bolus dose) x 5.9kg = 11.8mg dose
2gm = 2000mg = 20mg = 20mg/mL on hand
100mL = mL
11.8mg / 20mg/mL = 0.59mL rounded to 0.6mL
What amount of fluids will this patient have received at 3pm?
600mL
When referring to IV pumps, what to VTBI stand for?
Volume to be infused
What is happening in this image and what can you do to fix it?
The IV catheter has slipped out of place and the fluids have gone SQ. Removed IVC and notify DVM what has happened
Is a Time Tape needed on IV fluid bag if the patient is hospitalized (not in surgery) on an IV pump? Why or why not?
Yes, it is needed so anyone walking by can know how much fluids the patient should receive by then and how much they have gotten. This way if issues occur with a fluid pump (ex: stops pumping) vet staff can know how far behind a patient has fallen in their fluids.
A patient is being hospitalized on IV fluids. You notice your patient has an increased respiratory rate. Upon closer evaluation, you notice the patient has clear discharge coming from his nose and the conjunctiva of his eyes appear a bit swollen. What is this an indication of and how can you correct it?
Overhydration. Stop IV fluids and notify DVM (patient may need diuretics and diet change to reverse issue)
Calculate Molly’s surgical fluid rate:
11lbs
10mL/kg/hr
50mL/hr
11lbs x 0.454 = 4.99kg x 10mL = 49.94mL/hr
a. Post op fluid rate for Molly:
11lbs
6mL/kg/hr
b. What’s her VTBI for post-op fluids if given for 8hrs?
a. 30mL/hr
11lbs x 0.454 = 4.99kg x 6mL = 29.964mL/hr
b. 240mL
30mL x 8hrs = 240mL
A cat on IV fluids must receive 30mL/hr LRS. If drip set provides 60 drops/mL, how many drops per second should the drip rate be?
a. 1 drop per 2 seconds
b. 1 drop per 6 seconds
c. 3 drops per second
d. 16 drops per second
a. 1 drop per 2 seconds
30mL/hr x 60gtt/mL = 1800gtt/hr / 3600sec = 0.5gtt/sec x 2 = 1gtt/2sec
How many mLs of 50% dextrose should be added to 1 Liter of 0.9% sodium chloride to make 5% dextrose solution?
a. 1mL
b. 10mL
c. 50mL
d. 100mL
d. 100mL
(0.05 / 0.5) x 1000mL = 0.1 x 1000mL = 100mL
Volume of 50% dextrose = (Desired concentration / Stock concentration) x Total volume
