Surgical draping Flashcards
What are sterile linens or single-use disposable drapes that are available in various shapes and sizes?
surgical drapes
What are the 4 main roles of surgical drapes?
- Provide a fluid and blood resistant barrier –> This minimizes microscopic organisms from the unsterile areas to sterile fields.
- Reduce the risk of health care–acquired infections
- Cover the patient
- Cover equipment and furniture
What are the 6 key principles of surgical draping?
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU); be sure to unfold the drape correctly.
- Place the drape over or by the intended incisional site and unfold it to the periphery.
- Handle the drape as little as possible.
- Cuff your hand in a drape fold to prevent hand contamination.
- The top surface of the drape is considered sterile.
- After it is placed, do not move the drape.
What is 1 of the key principles of surgical draping?
cuffing
How does cuffing work?
the dominant hand is cuffed within the fold of the mayo stand cover while the opposite hand feeds the drape onto the mayo stand in a controlled manner
What are the 3 types of sterile towels?
- sterile impervious towel drape
- sterile disposable cloth towels
- sterile reusable cloth towels
Are sterile cloth towels considered drapes?
no
Why are sterile cloth towels not considered drapes?
they do not provide an impervious barrier between unsterile and sterile areas
What are the only type of towel considered to be a drape?
impervious towels
Why are impervious towels considered a drape?
they provide a barrier for microscopic organism passage between sterile and unsterile areas
What is an incise drapes
large plastic adhesive drapes that may be applied to the incisional area
What is a lap drape?
a drape used for abdominal, chest, and thoracic procedures
What is an upper extremity drape?
Used for…
- hand
- wrist
- elbow
- forearm
What is a lower extremity drape?
used for…
- foot
- ankle
- leg
What are used in lithotomy?
legging lithotomy drapes to cover the lower extremities
What do split sheets look like?
sheets with a linear cut in them to allow the drape to be wrapped around an area
What are split drapes used for?
ENT, head and neck, and orthopedic procedures
What are 4 considerations for contamination when draping?
- Requires careful attention to reduce the risk of contamination
- Is monitored by the entire surgical team
- Requires the surgical team to don a new pair of outer gloves after draping
- Requires that team members involved in draping do not reach over unsterile areas
When does contamination occur?
when fluid or blood penetrates through the surgical drape or gown.
What are 4 things draped in the OR?
- patient
- ring stand
- mayo stand
- back table
What are items not draped in the OR?
- OR lights
- anesthesia cart
- Electrosurgical unit
- anesthesia machine
- stool
Before draping a CVC, the provider should?
- wear a mask and goggles
- perform a preoperative skin prep
- wear a sterile gown and gloves
- use a full-body drape over the patient
Who removes the surgical drapes?
by the gowned and gloved scrubbed team member
What do the gown and gloves of the surgical team members do who are removing drapes?
protect them against blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials.
