Q

What are the 4 main roles of surgical drapes?

A
  1. Provide a fluid and blood resistant barrier –> This minimizes microscopic organisms from the unsterile areas to sterile fields.
  2. Reduce the risk of health care–acquired infections
  3. Cover the patient
  4. Cover equipment and furniture

Q

What are the 6 key principles of surgical draping?

A
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU); be sure to unfold the drape correctly.
  • Place the drape over or by the intended incisional site and unfold it to the periphery.
  • Handle the drape as little as possible.
  • Cuff your hand in a drape fold to prevent hand contamination.
  • The top surface of the drape is considered sterile.
  • After it is placed, do not move the drape.

17
Q

What are split drapes used for?

A

ENT, head and neck, and orthopedic procedures

18
Q

What are 4 considerations for contamination when draping?

A
  1. Requires careful attention to reduce the risk of contamination
  2. Is monitored by the entire surgical team
  3. Requires the surgical team to don a new pair of outer gloves after draping
  4. Requires that team members involved in draping do not reach over unsterile areas
19
Q

When does contamination occur?

A

when fluid or blood penetrates through the surgical drape or gown.

20
Q

What are 4 things draped in the OR?

A
  1. patient
  2. ring stand
  3. mayo stand
  4. back table
21
Q

What are items not draped in the OR?

A
  1. OR lights
  2. anesthesia cart
  3. Electrosurgical unit
  4. anesthesia machine
  5. stool
22
Q

Before draping a CVC, the provider should?

A
  1. wear a mask and goggles
  2. perform a preoperative skin prep
  3. wear a sterile gown and gloves

Q

Who removes the surgical drapes?

A

by the gowned and gloved scrubbed team member

24
Q

What do the gown and gloves of the surgical team members do who are removing drapes?
