Surgery and Safety Precautions Flashcards
Weight-bearing Precautions
Non-weight bearing = __ of body weight
0%
Toe-touching weight-bearing = up to ___ of body weight
20%
Partial weight-bearing = __ to __ of body weight
20-50%
Posterior Hip (THR) Precautions
No:
Hip flexion above 90 degrees, internal rotation, hip adduction, excessive trunk flexion.
Anterior Hip (THR) Precautions
No:
Hip external rotation
Hip adduction/crossing legs
Hip extension
Total Knee Replacement (TKR) Precautions
No pillow under the knee while in bed
Rest feet on the floor when sitting to increase ROM
Wear an immobilizer as instructed
Avoid kneeling, squatting, or twisting the knee
Always use the assistive device provided (usually rolling walker) until cleared by the doctor or physical therapist.
When ambulating, lead with the walker, then the surgical leg, followed by the non-surgical leg, being sure to keep the walker close
Keep the surgical leg elevated and extended with a towel roll under the heel when sitting or laying down
Avoid twisting the surgical leg
Avoid sitting in low chairs or surfaces. For example, use a bedside commode over the toilet or next to the bed as low toilets are more difficult to get up from following a knee replacement.
Spinal Precautions
No Bending forward farther than 90 degrees hip flex (see physician’s orders. May be required to don a TLSO before any forward flexion).
No Twisting of the spine
No Lifting greater than 5-10lbs (weight restriction is dependent on MD and procedure/ injury)
Use log roll for bed mobility
o Sternal Precautions
Do not push or pull with your arms.
Hug a pillow or teddy bear when getting in/out of bed or up/down from a chair.
Do not raise your elbows higher than your shoulders.
Brace your chest when coughing or sneezing. Huff instead of coughing if you can.
No lifting objects greater than 5 to 10 pounds or as instructed by your doctor.
Do not reach to the side or back.
Avoid twisting or deep bending.
Do not hold your breath during activity; counting out loud or talking will help.
Ask clearance from your doctor before driving
Pacemaker Precautions =
